Batik is a painting technique using wax as a blocking agent for the dye. Traditionally done on cloth, this ancient painting technique is also done on wood. An artist would cover parts of the wood with wax in a certain pattern, dye the wood and then remove the wax. This method then can be repeated for several layers depending on the detailing of the design. This detailed time honored tradition dates back more than 2000 years. Variations in masks may occur, because it is not mass produced.
